The Southlake Women’s Club invites the community to “Color your world with the sights and sounds of the 18th Art in the Square” Friday through Sunday at Southlake Town Square. Fans of this festival return year after year because the art showcased is consistently beautiful and unique, and newcomers will discover a show they will love. Whether you are a serious art collector or just wanting a new accessory for your home or office, the artwork of more than 160 internationally known artists will have something for everyone. The festival isn’t just about the art, though. It’s about music, food, and attractions in the children’s areas. And it’s about people — friends connecting, families having a fun cultural experience, the excitement of being among throngs of folks just having a good time.

“The 2017 Art in the Square promises to bring the best art, new food options, and fan-favorite music for all the family. One of our goals is to have a little something for everyone,” festival chairman Kris Nelson said. “A lot of people don’t realize that we make money on the food and beverages and entertainment for children. That said, we want the attendees to have good choices so they will spend more time at the festival. All monies raised are donated to our beneficiaries in Northeast Tarrant County that help women, children, and families in need,” Nelson added.

The Marshall Tucker Band is the Saturday-night headliner performing on the Methodist Southlake Hospital Main Stage at 8:30 p.m. The popular Southern rock music of the band has earned it seven gold and three platinum albums. And new this year is a chance to enjoy this phenomenal music in a special area up close to the stage. “The organizers of Art in the Square are excited to offer a limited number of $50 wristband tickets that will grant access to a blocked-off VIP area right up front by the stage,” spokeswoman Sherri Whitt said. “While tickets aren’t necessary to see the show, this is the best opportunity for premium concert viewing and enjoyment.” Purchase wristband tickets at form.jotform.us/71006323731141.

Friday’s big-name band will have everyone dancing in the street to the sounds of the Walton Stout Band. And check out the Main Stage and Gazebo Stage throughout the weekend to hear all genres of music and entertainment.

Attendees will want to see every exhibit in the Artists Plaza, but be sure to visit the 14 chosen as featured artists. Among them are Amos Amit (fiber), Keith Andry (watercolor), Jo Moncrief (oil/acrylic), Marjolyn Van Der Hart (2-D mixed media), and Randy Obrien (ceramics). And festivalgoers won’t want to miss the oil and acrylic work of Rodgers Naylor from Denver, this year’s People’s Choice winner.

“We continue to strive to bring to our community the best artistry and talent we can find,” said Terri Messing, chair of the artist committee. “A variety of styles, mediums, price points, and creativity will be on display for viewing and purchase.”

Hunger or thirst will not be a problem because there are a slew of options. In the LeBistro area, the King and Queen Pub and Cadillac Ranch Beer Garden have covered seating. Or cruise along Route 66 for food truck road stops and refresh yourself at the Filling Station. Feedstore, Tom & Che, Tazikis, Wildwood Grill, iFratelli, and Little German Kitchen will be serving up their specialties, too. Also, craft beers will be available in all drink tents.

Art in the Square paints a beautiful charitable picture

These grants will help fund many life-changing opportunities.

By Larre Green - Larre’s Corner -2014

Art in the Square — held in the Southlake Town Square — was a “beautiful” success.     And now let’s hand out the money!

After all, the hard work is done and all the accounting completed, then comes the best part . . . the passing out of the money.

After 15 years of bringing some of the best artists to our area, Art in the Square has surpassed the $2 million dollar mark in net proceeds. As has been done in the past, this year’s dollars raised were then distributed to many of our community’s incredible charities.

Recently, the Southlake Women’s Club Foundation approved $190,000 in grant funding from the 2014 proceeds to be disbursed. These grants will help fund so many life-changing opportunities such as scholarships, summer camp, and housing programs to help abused women and children, along with meal assistance for children, families, and senior citizens.

This year’s recipients are: Advent Urban Youth Development, Alliance for Children, Apex Arts League, Arts Council Northeast, Call A Ride in Southlake, Christ’s Haven for Children, Christmas is for Children, Christmas Providers, Community Enrichment Center, Community Hospice of Texas, Community Storehouse, FEAT-NT, Friends of Southlake Library, Girls of Greatness, GRACE, I can still shine!, Metroport Meals On Wheels, Mission Central Metroplex, North Texas SNAP, SafeHaven of Tarrant County, Special Olympics Texas - Southlake Carroll, Summer Santa, Tarrant Area Food Bank, The Battered Women’s Foundation, The Ladder Alliance, The WARM Place and the Southlake Women’s Club Foundation Scholarships - CISD.

Congratulations on an outstanding job and for making lives in our community so much better.

Art in the Square is a Feast for the Senses

Anyone who winds around the city’s roundabouts is familiar with Jane DeDecker’s sculptures, but Art in the Square showcased her work even more.

DeDecker, a sculptor, traveled from Loveland, Co. by airplane, but had assistants haul several big sculptures to Southlake Town Square for the event. She set up on the northwest corner of Rustin Park, next to where the city placed her poignant statue, “The Ties That Bind” in which a father is tying his son’s shoelace.

“It’s kind of nice to see how people are receiving it,” DeDecker said. “I think it’s nice for them to get to know me a little better.”

It’s her first time at Art in the Square, which drew thousands to the city over the weekend. The event, put on by the Southlake Women’s Club, has grown since it started in 2000. It was ranked 8th out of 100 art shows in the country by ArtsFair Sourcebook, a national listing of juried art shows and craft fairs.

Whether it’s a father and son heading off to fish or a mother and daughter playing patty cake, DeDecker said most of her artwork captures a universal glimpse of family life.

“It’s a positive message about my life here on earth. I love family,” she said.

Louis Cantillo’s booth was another that stood out with high definition photographs of his European travels on panoramic canvases.

The Scottsdale, Ariz. resident said Southlake’s is the best of about 20 art shows he enters each year. He’s missed only one since they began, he said.

“If they were all like this I’d be a millionaire by now,” he said. “This is a good venue and it’s got the right kind of people, the right location as far as people looking for unique artwork.”

Southlake’s Art in the Square Becoming More Popular

Officials with Art in the Square know their festival is growing in popularity.

The Art Fair SourceBook guide ranks Art in the Square as the No. 8 art festival — out of 600 — in the nation.

And more than 700 artists applied for space in this year’s show.

But perhaps the most visible proof came Thursday, when artinthesquare.com crashed under a “massive traffic slam.”

“We were getting 10,000 hits an hour this morning. It crashed it,” said Terri Messing, artist chair of Art in the Square. “Part of me thinks, ‘Oh that’s really bad.’ But another part of me says, ‘Wow, that’s a lot.'”

Service was restored later in the day — just in time for today’s opening.

Proceeds from Art in the Square Donated to Local Charities

Now in its thirteenth year Art in the Square in Southlake is a weekend full of food, friends, fun and of course art. Ranked number eight in the United States Art in the Square has become one of the most sought after art events by artists across the country.

“There’s oil paintings,” said Samantha Munns, Chair of Art in the Square. “There’s sculptures. There’s photography. There’s jewelry. We had over seven hundred applications again this year. It’s becoming so popular now. This year even our wait list we didn’t even have to touch it because every artist turned up. They were so glad that they had been chosen.”

“I’m very impressed with what’s here already,” said artist Stephen Baldauf. “It looks great. It looks like a really nice show.”

The Southlake Women’s Club hopes to have a great turn out this year and raise even more money than last year. Art in the Square lasts through this Sunday evening.

Art in the Square Set for this Weekend

Nice weather, a major band and, of course, quality artwork is the recipe for what organizers hope is the most successful Art in the Square yet.

The 13th annual Art in the Square will take place Friday through Sunday at Southlake Town Square. Times are 4-10:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Hosted by the Southlake Women’s Club, the event will feature about 145 national and local artists, as well as entertainment that includes a performance by country star Chris Cagle. “With the weather predicted to be phenomenal and with everyone excited about Chris Cagle, I think we’ll have a good crowd,” said Carmen Evans, the event sponsorship chairwoman. Evans said previous events have drawn between 35,000 and 50,000 people over three days. “We’re recognizing how much of a draw we’re getting from outside of Southlake,” Evans said. “More than 50 percent of the people we have surveyed are from outside Southlake.” Evans said that new digital billboards to promote the event have helped spread the word even more. The type of art available has also been a draw. This year’s event will include 2D medium, 3D relief and sculpture from traditional bronze, outdoor metal, multimedia decorative sculpture and photographic art. One highlight will be the oil artwork from Stephen Sebastian, who has been named the Art in the Square’s 2012 Artist of the Year. There will also be a local youth juried exhibit. “I think what makes this so popular is the quality of art,” said Samantha Munns, event chairwoman. “We have 700 artists apply for 150 spots. Not only that, but it’s the entertainment we have, as well as the location. We keep it pretty contained.” The free event will also include children’s activities.
